An effective consumer policy can change our citizens' lives for the better. The IMCO Committee is working hard to ensure consumers can operate safely and with confidence when buying products and services in the EU, whether in their local shop or when shopping online across borders.

The internal market (also referred to as the Single Market [SM]) - an area of free movement for goods, people, services and capital - is at the heart of the European project. To bring this into being, IMCO has been extremely active to remove technical, regulatory, and legal barriers within the Union.

The IMCO Working Group on the Digital Single Market restarts its activities with a first inaugural meeting of its Fourth period of sessions taking place on 2 March 2015. Ms Róża Thun Und Hohenstein MEP will be the new Chair, succeeding former MEP Mr Pablo Arias Echeverría, who chaired in the last mandate.

A total of 91 amendments were tabled by IMCO Members to the draft report by Ms Ford. In particular Members discussed three areas of the file namely the scope, the validity period and the risk categories of products. The Members further discussed the scope of the regulation, the validity period of the EU type approval and the declaration of conformity. These points will be further discussed among the Shadows with an aim of finding compromises. The Rapporteur is also looking into the possibility of compromises covering the topics of consumer protection and the burdens on businesses.
