Artificial intelligence industry 4.0 integration of industrial business web computing concept
On 7 December 2018, IMCO adopted its opinion for the ITRE Committee. IMCO was associated under Rule 54 of the Rules of procedure with exclusive competence as regards issues related to the Digital Single Market, in particular free movement of goods and services and consumer protection. IMCO stressed the need to develop a common framework for coordinated action, in order to boost innovation, free movement of AI-driven services and smart goods and thus complete the Digital Single Market.

The new set of rules governing the free flow of non-personal data and the use of Open data make it easier for SMEs and start-ups to develop innovative AI-enabled services and to enter new markets. Technological developments in smart products and services can benefit the knowledge economy, which is based on the quantity, quality and accessibility of information available.

Free movement and responsible development of smart goods is also highlighted. Common EU standards for AI and robotics, including interoperability and testing are of high relevance for smart manufacturing, robots, autonomous cars, virtual reality, healthcare and data analysis and should be further developed and promoted.

The ITRE Committee adopted its report on 14.01.2019, integrating the majority of the suggestions, put forward by IMCO. The Report was adopted by Parliament on 12.02.2019.
