As part of the New Deal for Consumers package, the EC published in April 2018 a proposal for a directive with the aim to strengthen enforcement of existing consumer protection rules and to modernise these rules in line with developments in the digital sphere. The proposal amended 4 existing directives on Consumer Rights, Unfair Commercial Practices, Unfair Contract Terms and Price Indication. The directive was approved by the EP on 17.04.2019 and still needs to be submitted for approval
to the EU Council of Ministers, likely in autumn 2019. Members States will have two years from the date of entry into force of the directive to transpose it into national law.
The new rules will bring tangible benefits for EU consumers, notably by tackling dual quality of consumer goods, introducing effective penalties for violations of EU consumer laws and strengthening consumer rights and transparency online.
