On 11 October, IMCO will consider the amendments to the draft opinion on the proposal for a Regulation concerning batteries and waste batteries (2020/0353(COD)).
The Rapporteur, Mr Antonius Manders (EPP), stresses in his opinion the need to use the leverage of the Internal Market to improve EU battery manufacturing and ensure a level playing field between manufacturers established in and outside the EU. He also underlines the need to introduce high environmental and social standards. During the presentation of the draft opinion in IMCO on 1 September, shadow rapporteurs broadly supported the approach set out in the opinion. This is also reflected in the amendments, in particular the need to raise social and environmental standards, to introduce safeguards to the benefits of consumers and companies that respect the rules and to clarify that the new sustainability requirements apply to batteries for light means of transport such as e-bikes.
