Under the rules adopted by the European Parliament on 28 April 2015, all new models of cars and light vans will have to be fitted with emergency call devices that automatically alert rescue services to car crashes (eCall) by 31 March 2018.The eCall will dial 112 - the Europe's single emergency number and communicate the vehicle's location to emergency services, even if the driver is unconscious or unable to make a phone call. It is estimated that it could save up to 2500 lives a year.

The IMCO Working Group on the Digital Single Market restarts its activities with a first inaugural meeting of its Fourth period of sessions taking place on 2 March 2015. Ms Róża Thun Und Hohenstein MEP will be the new Chair, succeeding former MEP Mr Pablo Arias Echeverría, who chaired in the last mandate.

On 26 May, the Working Group on the Digital Single Market (DSM) held his third meeting and will focus on the European Commission Strategy on the DSM. Created in 2011, the Working group on DSM led to the adoption of a number of parliamentary resolutions and has become a key platform for in-depth discussion where EP Members, EC, stakeholders and experts exchange views, identify new opportunities/challenges, remaining barriers and propose concrete measures to make the DSM in the EU a reality.

An exception to the EU ban on trade in seal products was deleted by the Internal Market Committee on Thursday. MEPs ruled out EU sales of seal products from “maritime resource management” hunts, in line with a 2014 World Trade Organisation ruling. But another exception, for the Inuit community, whose way of life depends on these products, remains.

In view of the European Council summit on 25-26 June which includes security and defence on its agenda, IMCO, SEDE and ITRE committees are organising a joint committee meeting on Wednesday 17 June, from15.00 to 16.00, in order to exchange views with Ms Bienkowska, Commissioner in charge of European Defence industry and single Market issues. The Parliament adopted in May the resolution on "the impact of developments in European defence markets on the security and defence capabilities in Europe"

Legislative Scrutiny time in IMCO
On22-23 June IMCO will discuss/vote on the opinions on Emission limits and type-approval for internal combustion engines for non-road mobile machinery and possible extension of geographical indication protection of the EU to non-agricultural products. IMCO will also hold a legislative scrutiny session on late payment Directive, with the participation of DG GROW. The Directive was adopted in 2011 in order to protect European businesses against late payment and to improve their competitiveness
