On 14 January, IMCO organised a public hearing in order to discuss with experts non-tariff barriers (NTBs) to trade in the internal market. With the participation of eight experts and of representatives of the Dutch Council Presidency and the Commission, the hearing focused on what are the remaining NTBs - both high-level and sector-specific - and how to address them. This hearing will provide an input to the own-initiative report on non-tariff barriers in the single market (D. Dalton / ECR).
Tariff barriers were successfully removed almost fifty years ago, but it is the continuing challenge of removing non-tariff barriers that motivates single market initiatives today. The removal of NTBs would help businesses across the EU, but the main beneficiaries would be consumers through lower prices and increased choice.
