Accessibility of public sector bodies' websites
Over 80 million EU citizens who have disability (medical/due to age) are prevented from accessing data/services on the Internet. Many websites lack adequately adapted content for the blind, the deaf and the hard of hearing as well as for those with low vision and with functional disabilities. To meet the needs of those EU citizens, the co-legislators agreed in 2016 on the first EU-wide rules to make public sector bodies' websites and mobile applications accessible for people with disabilities.

The Directive sets out minimum conditions for accessibility and it requires regular monitoring and reporting of the sites and apps' accessibility by Member States (MS). Its scope notably also covers mobile applications and is extended to cover all public sector bodies. MS have to prepare an "accessibility statement" on their compliance with the directive, explaining which parts of their website or app are not accessible.

The Directive also enables individuals to request specific information "on-demand", if the content is inaccessible. Users can notify any failures to comply with the requirements via a feedback mechanism. MS have to designate an authority tasked with monitoring and enforcing these rules.

The deadline for MS to transpose the Directive into their national laws expired on 23.09.2018. They have until 23.09.2019 to apply the provisions to new websites, 23.09.2020 to apply them to existing websites and 23.06.2021 to apply them to public sector bodies' mobile applications.
